All tomorrow's parties: Warhol fever hits Montreal

Parties, pop art, and music sync together in tributes to the cultural icon

Carolyn Gregoire

The undisputed "King of Pop Art" Andy Warhol summed up his philosophy on music and the notion of celebrity

POP RHETORIC: I pledge allegiance to the Dude

At any given point some asshole might decide to pee on your rug, but what can you do? The absurdities in life are unavoidable. My best advice is to pop in a The Big Lebowski DVD and take it easy. For those who have yet to see this movie, shame on you; put the paper down immediately and run to the nearest video store.

MUSIC: Grace Potter casts a spell with her folk wizardry

New album This is Somewhere soon playing everywhere

Steven Hoffer

Whether she's belting out lyrics in a small club or sending sweet chords up the side of a mountain on a clear festival afternoon, Grace Potter will make you turn your head and listen. With their high-powered blues rock anthems, Potter and her band The Nocturnals have risen in status from house band to highly sought after act on stages as large as Bonnaroo and the Newport Folk Festival.

OPERA: Gunfights and bar brawls at the Montreal Opera

Puccini's tale of the wild west kicks off 2008-2009 season

Emma Quail

La Fanciulla del West ("Girl of the Golden West"), set in 19th century California, is unquestionably Puccini's Western masterpiece. Differing stylistically from Puccini's other operas such as La Bohème and Madame Butterfly, La Fanciulla is chock-full of American influence: fanfares, gunshots, and snares.

FILM: Disharmony in Ste. Harmonie

Another horror film in a cornfield

Carolyn Yates

Combining sweeping cornfields with blood and mystery, The Descendant cleverly combines culture with suspense in a way that is both disturbing and thought-provoking. Although not very well put together, it engages the audience as it slowly reveals a shocking family secret set within Quebec's own little-known dark history.

Reviews

Ian Kelly. Speak Your Mind. Montreal native Ian Kelly's second album, Speak Your Mind, is a warm blend of folk, rock, and pop that will keep your finger on the repeat button. The first single and standout track is "Wiser Man," a catchy song that employs a range of instruments from acoustic guitar to violin.

THEATRE: More deception and drama than Days of our Lives

Madeleine Werker

The cast of Dangerous Liaisons performed on Saturday night to a packed house at the Leanor and Alvin Segal Theatre. The play, written by Christopher Hampton, is an adaptation of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos's classic 18th century novel, Les Liaisons Dangereuses.
