The Students' Society will be playing an active role in provincial politics in the coming month. Vice-President External Max Silverman said that SSMU will be running a campaign to encourage students to vote and will be educating them on the various party platforms. He said that SSMU will not be taking sides in the election, despite the Liberals' stance on the tuition freeze.
"The campaign will be non-partisan, entirely," he said. "Yes, the [Quebec Liberal party] has decided to campaign for de-freezing tuition, but the PQ's platform on education isn't
much better, besides keeping the freeze. There is no clear commitment for out-of-province and international students, and not nearly enough pledged in terms of investment."
Silverman said that SSMU will also be providing students with information on other parts of the party platforms, notably the environment, healthcare and the provincial debt.
Silverman is also working to clarify an important issue for out-of-province students: whether they are entitled to cast votes. Depending on the interpretation of the law, students from other provinces who have been renting property for longer than six months may be able to vote. Silverman said that he has been getting different answers from Elections Quebec, and is hoping to get the agency to give a clarification in writing soon.
